Microbiologist Abby Arcane returns to her hometown - a deadly virus is raging here, which must be studied and neutralized. She meets her colleague Alec Holland, their joint work rapidly develops into a romantic relationship, but an accident in the swamp puts an end to it, as a result of which Alec dies. Grief-stricken Abby does not yet know that she will meet her lover again, who has now turned into a humanoid plant with superhero abilities.
